The Radiator Leak That Wasn't: Diagnosing a 1964 Dodge Dart
The Complaint
Coolant appearing beneath a classic vehicle can quickly lead to one conclusion: a leaking radiator.
That was one of the concerns when Glacier Garage began working with this 1964 Dodge Dart.
What We Found
The cooling system was inspected and pressure tested while additional maintenance work was performed.
Further investigation showed that the radiator itself was not leaking.
Instead, the Dart's original-style cooling system uses an overflow hose without the type of recovery reservoir commonly found on modern vehicles.
Coolant leaving the overflow was traveling onto the area beneath the radiator, creating the appearance of a radiator leak.
The Result
The customer did not need a radiator replacement.
Identifying what a vehicle **doesn't** need can be just as important as identifying what it does.
Why This Matters
Automotive symptoms don't always identify their source.
Coolant beneath a radiator doesn't automatically mean the radiator has failed, just as a diagnostic trouble code doesn't automatically mean a particular component needs replacement.
Testing and inspection matter.
